Tim Wood will be talking at Grand Designs Live on Tuesday 3rd May at 12 midday, Wednesday 4th May at 3pm and Thursday 5th May at 3pm.
What exactly is a ‘bespoke’ kitchen?
The word bespoke means that something has been made to order, implying that the item has been specially made for a particular person. In terms of furniture a truly bespoke kitchen is one that has been designed and made specifically for you – not just that you have ordered it and the company has delivered their pre-made cupboards and shelves and fitted them in your kitchen. Lots of people claim that they offer a bespoke service but very few actually do.
At Tim Wood Ltd we start quite literally with a blank piece of paper at the first meeting, asking a multitude of questions that are appropriate for each project. We put ourselves in the client’s shoes but with our knowledge and experience. Some of the many questions that we need answers to include: Do they collect things? Do they have any appliances in mind? What do they like and dislike about their current kitchen? What storage do they need? We ascertain what kind of sink or sinks they would like, what appliances they prefer, what overall design style they like or dislike. If they live in a listed property or a house with a particular style, would they like to see that style reflected in the kitchen design? All these questions and more are designed to tease out of the client their preferences, in order to establish a workable brief.
We design and make kitchens for unusual spaces in a wide range of properties. We have made kitchens for many grand and listed houses and apartments worldwide, as well as kitchens in conventional houses. We often get involved in the minute detail of a kitchen from handmade dovetail drawers, custom made extraction systems, custom made stainless steel bins to fit a particular space and decorative carvings and relief work. We use a mixture of unusual timbers, materials and finishes to create a truly unique result.
In a truly bespoke kitchen, the space is completely optimised. Everything is designed to make the very best use of the space, from the kitchen units to the drawers, the island and the worktops; they are all specially selected and made for that individual client. We design the height of the worktops and appliance cabinets to suit the height of the end users. In other words, it’s no good giving a very tall or a very small client a kitchen that is not comfortable or practical for them to use.
