Friday 4th September 2026 we are delighted to welcome @ribasouthwest for what promises to be a seminal one-day symposium spent exploring why existing places and spaces are the future we need.

REWORK, curated by RIBA Southwest Chair Matt Williams from @lavigne_lonsdale, brings together architects, built environment professionals, developers, investors and funders working on reuse and regeneration, planners, local authority officers and councillors, community trusts and civic organisations, to explore what it takes to bring buildings back into use.

Every speaker has been given the same four questions: what it took, what it cost, what it cost to run, and where it nearly fell over.

The result is a day of real numbers, real setbacks and real lessons, told by the people who did the work rather than the people who wrote it up afterwards.

A day of connecting people who are interested in delivering reuse across the South West and beyond.

Louise Avery will lead us on a guided foraging walk followed by an indoor seasonal picnic feast of wild foraged foods prepared with freshly sourced ingredients 🌼

Learn how to identify common plants found in the UK, find out more about their medicinal benefits, and how to prepare and incorporate edible plants you may find growing in your local hedgerows into tried-and-tested healthy and delicious meals.

Louise Avery has been creating foraged food and drinks since 2010 when she began a new self-sufficient and healthy lifestyle on a Scottish island in the Hebrides.

“Foraging was a very big part of my childhood and upbringing. My mother taught me how to identify edible plants and how to use the natural environment around me on the Isle of Mull in the Hebrides where we lived.... She still has bookcases full of botanical books that we reference frequently.

l’ve always been an avid food and drink lover, albeit with no formal training. With regards to flavour, I find it totally enthralling. We all have specific taste receptors on our palate: sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami, and I wanted to factor all of these in when designing the L.A drinks - getting that precise balance between sugar and acidity.

A great place to start for beginner foraging is to look for easily recognisable ingredients that are safe to consume. Adding wild food into your diet is hugely beneficial for your microbiome, along with also being a boost for your mental health by connecting with nature.”

Who Shrunk Leighton House?

We are thrilled to invite you to an exclusive evening with Mulvany & Rogers, talking about their most recent project, Leighton House – followed by a viewing of the work in their Brook Lane studio before it appears on display at Leighton House Museum to mark the 100th anniversary since the house opened as a museum.

Mulvany and Rogers make one-twelfth scale bespoke minature houses and this most recent work arose from the personal interest of their client Sheikh Ahmed Bin Khalid Al Thani, a longtime patron and friend, as he recognises Frederic Leighton’s appreciative vision of Arab cultural heritage.

This is a rare opportunity to view this piece in close proximity, to meet the makers, and hear their story about its creation.

A stellar cast line-up of architects & educators join us for an inspiring evening exploring neurodivergent-inclusive school design.

1. Georgie Cutbill - built a career managing complex briefs, practising exacting standards, & forging rewarding relationships. Georgie combines metropolitan polish with deep local knowledge & helps, among others, the recent Hummingbird Project in Bruton.

2. Mark Ellerby - long time Glove Factory Studios member, is a highly versatile architect & is particularly knowledgeable on Education designing for Autism & SEND. Mark’s work includes delivering PassivHaus buildings with a keen interest in collaboration using natural building materials.

3. Fergus Feilden - Founder at Feilden Fowles, leads project teams to deliver beautiful buildings with great social & environmental impact. Projects include National Railway Museum in York, Nature + Love at the Horniman Museum & Garden, & the Stirling shortlisted Weston at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

4. Peter Wharmby - Pete is a highly skilled communicator on issues pertaining to autism, ADHD & neurodiversity. Shortlisted for the National Diversity Awards 2026, Pete’s third book, Different Minds, published on 3rd September 2026, follows two successful publications - ‘What I Want To Talk About’, & ‘Untypical’, exploring autistic special interests and how the world may look to autistic people.

5. Matt Williams - chair of RIBA Wiltshire & Director at architectural practice Lavigne Lonsdale. Matt & his team believe “good places don’t happen by accident”. Matt joins us to support this sentiment & the value of the work RIBA Chartered Architects deliver.

6. Joanna Watchman - Managing Director at Content Coms, & long time studio member, Jo is a trusted advisor on strategic comms & marketing. Jo is exceptionally skilled at transparent communication strategies that drive awareness of issues we need to pay more attention to, & as an experienced event facilitator, Jo is perfectly qualified to host this panel of experts.
